HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – There’s a new competition for Holland-area students to vie for.
Through Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, the city of Holland’s International Relations Commission is taking applications for eight high school and four 8th great pupils to participating in the Tulip City’s first foray in the Academic WorldQuest. Hosted by the World Affairs Council of America, the annual competition aims to stretch students’ understanding of current global political, geographical, economic, historical and cultural matters.
According to Esther Fifelski, director of the city’s Human Relations Department, this is the beginning of what will hopefully be a long-term investment. “I think that this is a wonderful learning opportunity,” she said on “WHTC Morning News” during a Monday appearance. “We have a very competitive spirit in the City of Holland, so I know that our high school students will be very competitive and will be interested in competing in this initiative.”
The city is also looking for adult volunteers to coach the youngsters, as well as subject matter experts in various categories such as global protest, international labor organizing, US Foreign Service in the 20th Century, Uzbekistan, and the post-pandemic economy.
A link for students to apply online is here; adults wishing to volunteer are encouraged to go to the city’s website and submit a non-appointed volunteer application.
