WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – To some, Congress is “fiddling while Rome burns” when it comes to passing a new COVID 19 stimulus package before year’s end.
This sentiment stems from frustration from minority Republicans in the House, who say that majority Democrats are more interested in passing legislation that would legalize marijuana nationwide and outlaw big cats than dealing with the ongoing economic effects of the pandemic. The Dems counter that they already had passed a $3 trillion HEROES Act earlier this year that the Senate is ignoring, so they feel as if they have already done their job.
A compromise $900 billion stimulus proposal was unveiled by a group of bipartisan Senators earlier this week, something that Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga of Zeeland would vote for if it gets to the House.
“It’s a bipartisan bill; that’s a fresh start, and I think that there are some good things in there” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Thursday. “Will it pass independently? Possibly, meaning as a stand-alone (bill), or will it get rolled into some sort of omnibus bill? That may end up being where we finally land on this, and I hope we do.”
Congress has two weeks before Christmas to pass any legislation and get it to the President’s desk before the current session ends and all pending bills get flushed out ahead of the new session in the New Year.
