HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — High winds, with gusts to 60 mph are blowing across Allegan, Oceana, Van Buren, Mason, Muskegon and Ottawa counties, and some areas are seeing power outages.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning, in effect until 10 p.m., noting that potential damage include downed tree limbs or trees, with scarred power outages. Meteorologists indicated people should avoid walking around during the high winds, and should avoid being near windows or on upper levels of their homes during this weather. People who must travel are being asked to exercise caution and be aware that wind gusts may cause problems navigating cars, especially high-profile vehicles.
Holland BPW’s outage map indicted two outage areas, on Harrison Avenue between 17th and 18th streets, affecting about 37 customers, and across Lake Macatawa, on Crestwood Drive, between North and South Baywood drives, affecting seven customers.
Consumers Energy’s outage map shows more than 33,000 customers affected by outages — from areas around Fennville, Manlius Township and Allegan, as well as smaller outages scatted near Douglas to more than 2,200 customers in the area of Allendale and Robinson townships.
Consumers’ outage map details indicate that some may not get power back on until later this evening, and some outages may continue through Monday morning. as of 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020, the utility had deployed 173 crews to fix a reported 792 outages.
Consumers Energy offers a list of safety tips online. Here a few:
- If you see a downed power line, stay at least 25 feet away from it, even if it’s not sparking. Call 911, then call Consumers, (800) 477-5050.
- If you see a utility crew at work, keep your distance for safety reasons, including to limit the spread of COVID-19.
- Operate generators safely, when they are needed — at least 25 feet away from the home or garage, and in a dry area.
