HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Drivers on US 31 can expect lane closures between M-45 (Lake Michigan Drive) and Comstock Street until 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2020.
The lane closures are for road work and the safety of workers — but this project is weather-dependent. Driver are encouraged to slow down and allow extra room for safety’s sake.
Andy’s Law, passed in 2001 and updated in 2008, imposes fines of up to $7,500 and 15 years in jail for motorists who injure or kill anyone in a road-construction work zone The law is named for Andrew Lefko, a 19-year-old paralyzed after being hit by a vehicle while working on I-275 in Metro Detroit.
Michigan law also provides for the following points to be added to a driver’s record who gets ticketed in a work zone:
- 3 for speeding 10 mph or less over the posted limit.
- 4 for speeding more than 10 mph but not more than 15 mph over the limit.
- 5 for speeding more than 15 mph over the limit.
Drivers who accumulate 12 or more points in a two-year period are required to undergo a driver assessment reexamination with the Michigan Secretary of State. Depending on the outcome, a driver’s license may be restricted, suspended or revoked.
