HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — An early morning crash on the Lake Michigan Drive bridge over the Grand River left two people with injuries, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s authorities.
Police learned a 26-year-old Allendale man, driving a 2006 Buick Ranier on Lake Michigan Drive near Linden Drive NW, was on the bridge over the river when he lost control of the Buick on the icy bridge. The Buick hit the guardrail, stopping in the eastbound traffic lane. A 2009 Chevy Impala, with a 22-year-old Jenison man at the wheel, hit the Buick.
The Buick’s driver later told police that he could see oncoming traffic and could tell other drivers were not going to be able to stop in time. He jumped out of his car and off the bridge, onto the ground below. But that jump left him with a leg injury, and he went by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Impala was treated at the scene for facial injuries, telling emergency responder he’d seek further treatment on his own.
Police closed eastbound Lake Michigan Drive for a little over an hour for crash investigation and cleanup.
