HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A long-standing problem with the Holland Board of Public Works is finally being addressed, albeit with some inconvenience for motorists and residents near the Tulip City’s Eastern Gateway.
Crews began work on Monday to replace a distribution water main underneath East Eighth Street, from Walnut Avenue to US-31 that has, according to BPW General Manager Dave Koster, “a history of frequent and very disruptive breaks. Due to such a frequent break history, the difficulty of repairing these breaks, and the significant impact these breaks have had on customers, HBPW engineering staff prioritized the water main for replacement.”
During Holland City Council’s meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7, 2020 at City Hall, 270 S. River Ave., memberof council will consider Koster’s request for nearly $700 thousand for the replacement of that water main in a contract with Diversco Construction. That firm submitted the low bid among three received by the BPW for the project, which will include not only the water main replacement, but also the installation of a temporary water main on the sidewalk to accommodate the needs of local residents during the length of the project, which is expected to last through November 25th. Adding to the costs is a replacement of both westbound lanes of East 8th Street that had to be uprooted.
While the water main is being replaced, eastbound East Eighth Street will be blocked off, with traffic diverted to Chicago Drive and US-31 in order to get around the project, while westbound traffic will veer into the eastbound lanes during this time.
