HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Over the last five years, 137 people have been killed in bicyclist-involved crashes in Michigan. Last year along, 21 bicyclists were died on Michigan roads, according to Michigan State Police.
During this year’s national bicyclist safety enforcement week, Sept. 9-15, 2020, Michigan police officers targeted five cities – Dearborn, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon, and Warren. Each has high number of bicyclist-related traffic crashes.
Officers looked for drivers making illegal turns; failing to stop at a signal or before a crosswalk; or failing to give at least three feet when passing a bicyclist — and for bicyclists not riding with traffic, or not using lights when riding at night. As a result, 116 drivers got warnings from police; 186 were ticketed; 117 bicyclists got warnings from police; and none were ticketed.
The enforcement campaign is paid for by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and coordinated by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.
