HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A 71-year-old Holland woman suffered minor injuries after she was hit by a car while using her wheelchair to cross Ottawa Avenue.
Holland Police Capt. Robert Buursma told WHTC the crash happened just before noon Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020.
Officers dispatched to the intersection of Ottawa Avenue and 17th Street learned that a 60-year-old Zeeland woman had been driving a 2014 Buick Encore north on Ottawa. She stopped at 17th Street stop sign and later told police that she checked the intersection but didn’t see the woman in the wheelchair.
The woman in the wheelchair has started crossing Ottawa as the Zeeland woman started turning onto 17th, at which point the car hit the wheelchair.
The Holland woman went to Holland Hospital as a precautionary measure, Buursma said, for what appeared to be minor injuries.
Buursma added a reminder to drivers in his note to WHTC: “When approaching a stop sign, a vehicle must stop prior to the crosswalk if one exists, and then must yield to pedestrians in or about to enter the crosswalk prior to proceeding into the intersection.”
