FREELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association isn’t waiting for any new developments in the battle against COVID 19.
The President’s Council, in a Friday, September 4th meeting that wasn’t disclosed publicly by the league until five days later, voted to extend its conference-sponsored athletic events ban through January 1, 2021. Not only is this a reaffirmation of its decision earlier this summer to postpone all fall sports until spring, but it also means that the start of the league’s winter sports season will also be delayed due to the outbreak.
In a statement, the MIAA said that, “The delay in competition will grant institutions, staff, and students additional time to adjust to new safety protocols on campus in the COVID-19 era while also allowing for continued testing and treatment developments, which remain a key factor for the return of athletics across the nation…Every effort will be made to ensure a competitive experience for all MIAA student-athletes.”
More information as to the MIAA’s “plan for fall sports playing in the spring semester and conference-sponsored athletic events for the remainder of 2020” is here.
