HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Divers from the Van Buren Sheriff’s Office, Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, and South Haven Area Emergency Services searched along the South Pier on the Lake Michigan side for the body of an 18-year-old Jackson man believed drowned Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020. They were unable to search the lake Monday because of dangerous conditions. On Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, divers searched until darkness without success. Authorities said in an email to media late Tuesday that future search mission’s in this incident will be determined by Van Buren Sheriff’s officials.
The man’s name has not been released by authorities, but police say family members have been notified. South Haven Area Emergency Services officials also clarified early statements about the color of warning flags on the beach Sunday afternoon.
Red flags as well as yellow flags were flying on the beach and the two men who got caught by the current were between the red and yellow flagged zones, according to SHAES officials, with red flags immediately south of the South Pier. The yellow flags were replaced with red flags while emergency responders were rescuing the first man, a 19-year-old Jackson resident.
