SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A rescue operation in the waters of Lake Michigan near South Haven’s South Beach was conducted on Thursday afternoon.
South Haven Area Emergency Services personnel were dispatched to the area around 4:45 PM on a report that family members were “playing on boogie boards” when rip currents drove them several hundred feet towards the South Pier. Two children, aged 10 and 14, were driven against the rocks, and bystanders tossed life rings into the waters to retrieve the youths before rescuers arrived. The children were treated at the scene for “abrasions.”
According to SHAES, waves were four to six feet at the time, and red flags had been posted at the beaches, as the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids had posted a Beach Hazards Statement for the waters of Lake Michigan, from South Haven to Ludington, through 11 PM on Friday.
