HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, mailed a statement to media after participating in an Energy and Commerce Committee briefing on the coronavirus outbreak Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020.
“Protecting the health and safety of families in southwest Michigan and across the nation is one of my top priorities,” he wrote, “Today I participated in a briefing with the Energy and Commerce Committee on the 2019 coronavirus outbreak that reviewed the current status of the virus and action steps by the U.S. government. The CDC has been monitoring the outbreak and responding to it since early January. The NIH continues to work on a vaccine. The FDA is working with other government agencies and the private sector to encourage the development of medical products that may diagnose, treat, or fight the virus.”.
He added that he expects to host a hearing with the Energy and Commerce committee’s health subcommittee next week, to talk about resources and action plans to limit the spread of this coronavirus in the U.S.
Coronavirus is a general name for a type of upper respiratory infection, with symptoms similar to the flu. Health officials have urged people to step up flu prevention efforts, such as handwashing, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and staying away from other people when ill.
