HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The repercussions of President Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria are, according to Congressman Fred Upton, “like a dagger to the heart” of U.S. allies.
Upton, a St. Joseph Republican, said Tuesday Trump’s decision is an “irreparable blunder,” going on to say the Syrian Kurds were among the strongest of U.S. allies in the fight against ISIS. (Hear the complete interview.)
“It is a real dagger to the heart to walk away from our allies,” Upton said. “And that trust is never going to be duplicated again … I mean how good is our word when you step away from an ally like this?”
Upton acknowledged that he’s not on any House committees related to foreign policy, but Trump’s decision appears to be one he made without advice from his advisors.
Upton indicated he is troubled by news of testimony by former White House analyst Fiona Hill, who specialized in Russian affairs, before three bi-partisan House committees: Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight and Reform. She indicated then-National Security advisor John Bolton told her to alert National Security Council lawyers about what appeared to be a shadow State Department action by President Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani.
“Again, legitimate questions need to be asked, and we need to see what the answers are,” Upton said.
