HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Discover Series by Lakeshore Makers is returning to Herrick District Library this fall with two classes for those 16 years old and older. The series is a “from-the-community-to-the-community” opportunity, said Karen Goorhouse with HDL, and the latest installation will feature soldering and amateur radio.
“By bringing in skilled people from the community such as the Lakeshore Makers, HDL hopes to open doors for others to discover new things, to inspire exploration and connect people who have common interests,” Goorhouse said. “Who knows what new hobby, career or friendships will develop over a shared interest?”
From home maintenance and auto repair to electronics and crafting, knowing how to solder is a handy skill to have. No matter what the purpose is, learning how to connect the parts makes things work or look better without added cost to hire someone to fix it or buy a new item, Goorhouse said.
Participants will learn soldering skills by assembling and soldering their own circuit board during this class 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, at HDL Main, 300 S. River Ave. in Holland. Register online at herrickdl.org/events or call 616-355-3101.
When cell phones, landline phones, the Internet and other systems are down or overloaded, amateur radio still gets the message through. “Discover: Amateur Radio” is a chance for those 16 years and older to try out the technology 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 at HDL Main. Participants will learn about communicating without phones, test out different radios, and find out about area amateur radio competitions. This event will be hosted by Lakeshore Makers and the Holland Amateur Radio Club. Registration required beginning Oct. 22 at herrickdl.org/events.
