SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Voters in the Saugatuck Public School district may be asked again to approve a bond proposal.
The electorate rejected a $50.7 million-dollar request this past May that would, in part, fund renovations and expansions of the district’s two major buildings in Douglas Elementary School and Saugatuck Junior/Senior High School. After that defeat by a margin of 58 percent to 42 percent, Superintendent Dr. Tim Travis and other district officials conducted a survey and developed a revised facilities plan that is about $11 million less which should be presented before the Saugatuck board during this evening’s monthly meeting.
“We kept our guiding principles intact that were used to set our vision of what our facilities could look like,” Travis explained during an appearance on “WHTC Morning News” last Friday. “We’ve had several board meetings workshops, and (tonight) we’re going to come back to the board and have them take one last look before we ask them to approve (wording on) another bond (proposal) moving forward.
“We’ve reworked the design significantly and just got a lot more input on it, so I think we’re in pretty good shape moving forward to explain where we are, what we’ve redone, and what we’re going to ask for coming up soon.”
If Saugatuck does put a bond proposal before voters on May 7th, it will be the second district to do so on that ballot along the Lakeshore. West Ottawa will be asking its electorate to approve a 98 million-dollar bond issue on that date.
The Saugatuck Board meets at 6 PM this evening at Saugatuck Junior/Senior High.
