The Detroit Red Wings named Ben Simon as the new coach of its top minor league affiliate in Grand Rapids yesterday. He replaces Todd Nelson, who left last month to become an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars, as the 11th bench boss in Griffins’ history. Simon had been an assisant during Nelson’s three-year tenure in the Calder City. The other assistant coach, Bruce Ramsay, is reportedly expected to now leave the Detroit organization after being bypassed for this selection.
