UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM) — Byron Center resident Allan Perry Hielkema suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle crash on Sunday morning, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dean DeVries.
Hielkema, 80, was nearly home after driving from Florida, when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, DeVries said.
His car hit a stand of trees near the intersection of Byron Road and 24th Avenue in Jamestown Township, DeVries said.
Hielkema, who had been wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Metro Hospital with minor injuries, DeVries said.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s road patrol deputies were assisted by Jamestown Fire and Rescue and Life EMS.
