UNDATED (WHTC AM/FM) — H. Wayne Huizenga, who became the only U.S. businessman to create three Fortune 500 companies, has died, according to mutliple reports. The Chicago native was 80.
Huizenga — no direct relation to Zeeland Congressman Bill Huizenga — is responsible for the video-rental chain Blockbuster; trash hauler Waste Management Inc.; and retailer AutoNation Inc.
Huizenga grew up in Florida and briefly lived in Michigan while attending Calvin College in the 1950s. He left the school in his sophomore year. He later created a scholarship named for his family, which helps Florida students attend Calvin College.
He once owned three Florida pro sports teams: the Dophins, the Marlins and the Panthers.
