HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – More cases of fraud are being announced by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and this time people are trying to get money by pretending to be local law enforcement.
Captain Mark Bennett says that multiple victims have reported that the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department has phoned them, claiming the victims had outstanding warrants or unpaid tickets. The suspect would then demand that the victims send payment for the unpaid bonds or tickets with the victims’ credit or debit cards.
The suspect pretended to be various Ottawa County deputies and detectives and even gave out a bogus call back number and department ID to the victims they could not reach.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind the public that authorities would not ask for any kind of money over the phone. Fines, bond, or unpaid ticket dues are always collected through U.S. Mail or by a deputy in person.
Fraud reports can be made to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department by calling (616) 738-4022.
