CROCKERY TWP., MI (WHTC- AM/FM) – A Crockery Township woman has joined the long list of lakeshore residents recently affected by scammers.
On July 19th, an 81-year-old Crockery Township woman was called at her home on the 1800 block of 144th Ave by a person she believed to be a police detective.
According to Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, the caller told the woman that he was a police detective and that he had arrested a friend of the victims son. The suspect than had a woman talk to the victim during the call. The victim says the woman “sounded emotional,” so she believed the story.
The caller than told the victim that she needed to FedEx a large sum of money for a bond payment to an address in Brooklyn, NY. The victim complied, and a few days later received another call from the suspect, asking for more money. Once again, the victim sent the suspect money in the same fashion.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is working with NYC authorities, but have no suspects at this time.
