UNDATED (WHTC) – A pair of crashes involving motorcycles several minutes apart hospitalized three bikers late last night.
The first collision occurred on Lake Michigan Drive near 14th Avenue in Tallmadge Township. According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, 28-year-old Samuel Grimm of Grand Rapids was motoring eastbound, with 37-year-old Lars Wendel nearby, when Grimm struck a deer in the roadway and Wendel collided with Grimm’s machine. Both men were helmeted as they were thrown from their motorcycles. Grimm and Wendel were taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in stable condition for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The second crash occurred at the intersection of Bass Drive and 96th Avenue in Robinson Township. Grant Hammel had halted his southbound truck at the stop sign and saw the motorcycle of Ron Green “in the distance,” but when he pulled out to turn left, the motorcycle “was suddenly in front of him.” The 26-year-old Green of West Olive wasn’t helmeted and was taken to Spectrum-Butterworth in serious condition with leg and back injuries, while the 19-year-old Hammel of Grand Rapids was not hurt. Wildfong added that speed may have been a factor in this incident.
Both wrecks remain under investigation.
