GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC) – A busy freeway in eastern Ottawa County was closed for a while during the late stages of the afternoon commute on Tuesday due to a two-vehicle crash.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Eric West, Robert VanderMolen was driving his car eastbound on I-196, approaching the M-6 junction east of Hudsonville, when his vehicle left the roadway and hit a guardrail. The car then veered into a semi, causing the rig to hit the left guardrail and come to rest in the left lane of the highway.
VanderMolen, a 65-year-old Grand Rapids man, had to be extricated by rescue crews and was taken in serious condition to Metro Health for treatment. The trucker, 43-year-old Daniel Lamer of Wyoming, was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation.
