HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A complaint has been filed by a Holland family against Black River Schools.
The parents of a seventh-grade student at Black River Public Schools in Holland has filed federal complaints over disability access. Brian Dykema says the issue is about more than just his 12-year-old daughter, Katie, who has a form of bone dysplasia, which makes walking painful and tiring. “There is going to be other Katie’s that come along. Other kids who with lesser or worse condition that Katie is in and the school needs to be able to service all of those kids” says Dykema.
He and his wife say they have reluctantly filed an Americans with Disabilities Act complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice and another with the U.S. Department of Education seeking to have an elevator installed.
Head of School Shannon Brunink says they’ll put in one if the family can raise the money. “We’re looking for ways to help the student get to class on time, help all students get to class on time in a dignified manner. The frustrating part is that there is no clear answer that satisfies everyone.” Brunink said.
