GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – The holiday weekend is fast approaching and the boating season is in full swing on Michigan’s Great Lakes. You can make you experience on the water a safer one with a new app.
The U.S. Coast Guard has a smartphone app. Petty Officer Ryan Huber of the Coast Guard Station in Grand Haven came up with the idea last summer. With the app you’ll be able to:
- Find the latest safety regulations
- Request a vessel safety check
- Check your safety equipment
- File a float plan
- Navigation Rules
- Find the nearest NOAA buoy
- Report a hazard
- Report pollution
- Report suspicious activity
- Request emergency assistance
Huber says the app has an “Emergency Assistance” button which sends for help using GPS to track where you are. The app is free for Android and Apple iOS devices.
