SPRING LAKE, MI (WHTC) – A boating accident can happen at any time, as a fatal overnight incident in Spring Lake can attest.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies say that 34-year-old Brian Basarabski of Grand Rapids fell off of a vessel at the Barrett Boat Works complex off of Savidge Street around 1 AM. The unnamed boat owner dived in and swam around both the boat and the dock without finding Basbarabski. It took divers from the Ottawa County Northwest Dive Team and the sheriff’s department over a half hour from the time of the incident beore finding him in a dozen feet of water.
Basbarabski was initially taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital in critical condition before being flown to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, where he succumed to his injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
