ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The first roundabout in the Holland/Zeeland area will become a reality next year.
The Zeeland City Council last night formally endorsed the inclusion of such a traffic control solution as part of the intersection reconstruction of the Main Avenue at Washington Avenue junction on the city’s western gateway. There had been public sentiment for and against the roundabout, and Mayor Kevin Klynstra says that this matter wasn’t one that was being taken lightly. “We’ve done a traffic study with it,” he explained. “We’ve looked at different areas that have roundabouts, like Grand Rapids is putting in quite a few of them and they seemed to work there, and Grand Rapids is a lot bigger than what Zeeland is.”
City Manager Tim Klunder says that a decision was needed no later than May 1st in order to have the estimated 2.1 million-dollar project bid out by the end of this year and to have work begun next spring.
There is currently a traffic roundabout at the intersection of 68th Avenue and Randall Street in Coopersville, as well as at the junction of M-43, 12th Avenue and 72nd Street southeast of South Haven.
