GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) – The M-6 highway from Interstate 196 to Wilson Avenue will be completely closed and rebuilt in July, with work lasting until mid-November.
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials provided project details, scheduling and traffic information at a meeting in Hudsonville Thursday evening.
MDOT spokesman John Richard says they had originally planned to do it in 2022, then 2018, but realized it couldn’t be put off.
“After this mild winter that we had which was pretty tough on the roads, we had to move it up to this year because it couldn’t go through another winter. So everyone that takes M-6 is very thankful that it’s being reconstructed.”
MDOT plans more forums before the project gets underway this summer.
“This allows the workers to do more work and it’s not only safer for the workers but for the motorists as well.” says Richards.
The highway has been crumbling years ahead of schedule due to problems with the concrete used when it was built.
