HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – For 45% of students eligible for free or reduced priced lunch during the school year, summers can be tough on families to feed their kids.
That’s why Gov. Rick Snyder proclaimed this week as Meet Up and Eat Up Summer Food Service Awareness Week to garner attention to a little-thought about problem.
Meet Up and Eat Up is a program administered by the Michigan Department of Education to help feed kids who may not get breakfast or lunch at home during the summer. Ottawa Food, an agency that is devoted to ending hunger in Ottawa County, is handling all of the resources.
Community partners will serve breakfast, lunch, and some snacks at locations all over Ottawa County, including multiple locations in both Holland and Grand Haven.
Lisa Uganski, an Ottawa Food Coordinator with the program, says any student 18 and under can come to eat, regardless of their family’s financial situation or where they live.
