GRANDVILLE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Bill Huizenga may not have showing favoritism to his hometown, but the results of his annual Congressional Art Competition was an apparent clean sweep for Zeeland.
On Wednesday, the Second District office of the five-term Republican US House Representative announced that “Inaccurate Portrayal of a Pencil Witch: Volume One” captured the honor for display in the US Capitol building in Washington over the next year, alongside other winners from similar competitions by other Congressional members. The work by Jody Brown of Zeeland East High was chosen by what Huizenga’s office said was “a panel of local art experts.”
In a statement, Huizenga said, “The ‘Inaccurate Portrayal of a Pencil Witch: Volume One’ is an expressive and detailed visualization of (Brown’s) incredible talent. This piece is a fantastic representation that shows the skill and creativity of young artists across West Michigan.”
The second and third place finishers – “iDog: Study of Typography” by Makayla Borgman, and “The Vanishing” by Grace Bos, both of Zeeland West High – will be displayed in Huizenga’s southern district office in Grandville.
The Congressman’s office staff also weighed in on their favorite for the first time, choosing “A Piz(za) Art” by Brianne Misher of Zeeland East High.
The top 12 pieces of art submitted by students across West Michigan are posted on Congressman Huizenga’s Facebook page.
