HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Ottawa Conservation District will host a tire-recycling event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020, at 12150 Ransom St..
This is by appointment only. Call (616) 842-5852, Ext. 5. Limit 10 tires per person — no tires over 34-inches in diameter. The OCD pays $1 per tire.
Lexi Kasper, an administrative specialist with the district, told WHTC old tires are an environmental hazard. (Listen to her complete interview.)
“They can, like leach heavy metals into the ground,” she said. “They’re big breeding sites for mosquitos and obviously we don’t want that.”
Mosquitos can transmit such diseases as Zika, West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and the Jamestown Canyon virus, all of which have been detected in Michigan over the last year.
