HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The COVID-19 pandemic has many people suddenly dealing with an unexpected death — nearly 47,000 Americans have now died from the virus, many others are in critical care, and that has forced some to confront end-of-life issues as well.
Jessica Arends, a Holland attorney with the Holland-based Cunningham Dalman firm, told WHTC having legal documents organized are important for everyone, not just the rich and famous.
“It doesn’t matter how much you have,” she said. “You want a say in who gets that money. Financial power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney — that has nothing to do with how much money we have. We all need that document.”
Arends says the documents are easy to put in place and can be affordable.
“With a package like that — the will, healthcare and financial power of attorney — all of the legal advice and counseling from us,” she said, costs about $500.
Arends says all of the documents can be drawn up and even signed electronically, making a face-to-face visit unnecessary during the current “stay home” rule.
