HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan County Health Department is celebrating Men’s Health Month, by educating the public about the many preventable health problems affecting men and boys. The goal is to empower them and their loved ones to create a healthier, happier life.
Men die five years younger than women, on average, and at higher rates for most leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics.
Men suffer more workplace injuries; are less likely to be insured; and far less likely to see a doctor for preventive care. A few tips for men and those who love them:
- Eat healthy and get moving: A healthy diet and physical activity will help men live longer and reduce their risks of serious health problems — such as heart disease, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
- Schedule a checkup: Routine doctor visits while you’re healthy can help doctors spot certain diseases and conditions which may not have obvious symptoms.
- Learn the signs of a heart attack: Major signs include pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back; feeling weak, light-headed, or faint; chest pain or discomfort; pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder and shortness of breath. If you think you (or someone you know) is having a heart attack, call 911 immediately.
- Maintain mental health: Depression is a leading cause of disease or injury for men. Signs may include persistent sadness, grumpiness, and feelings of hopelessness, tiredness, decreased energy, and / or thoughts of suicide. Depression is treatable in many ways — talk therapy, treatment for medical conditions which cause depression (such as Type 2 diabetes), meditation, and, for some conditions, medication. Ask your doctor or a qualified mental health professional about your treatment options.
