HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Kent County Prosecutor Office announced Wednesday a murder charge is being filed against former Holland resident Jared Chance.
He is due in Kent County’s 61st District Court today, having already been arraigned on two related charges, of failure to report a death and mutilating a body.
The victim, Ashley Young of Oshtemo Township went missing for days before some of her remains were discovered in the basement of a home Chance was renting in Grand Rapids. The two had been Facebook friends and family members have said they were spotted together on a surveillance video.
Chance’s parents, James and Barbara Chance of Holland, are due back in the 61st District Court on perjury charge on Jan. 10. They were charged with perjury for failing to alert police to what they allegedly learned from their son about Young’s disappearance. But an attorney for the couple told the media that James Chance took his son to a Grand Rapids police station to make just such a report and the family was told to report to Kalamazoo County authorities, who were handling what was then the disappearance of Ashley Young. Jared Chance was arrested the following day.
