HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning may have been caused by the driver’s several medical conditions, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s authorities.
Police were called just after 9 a.m. to the scene, near the intersection of 96th Avenue and Van Buren Street in Blendon Township.
Deputies found a 57-year-old Newaygo man who had been southbound on 96th Avenue near Van Buren, when his vehicle crossed the center line and left the road, striking a driveway culvert, and comign to rest in a ditch.
The driver told police he may have fallen asleep, but does have several medical conditions that could have caused the crash.
Blendon Township firefighters helped the man out of the vehicle. He went by Life Ambulance to a nearby hospital with what police called non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, but police indicated the driver had been wearing a seatbelt. They indicated alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.
