ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – As the storm named Dorian moves towards Puerto Rico, the island commonwealth is still scrambling to get back onto its feet from Hurricane Maria of less than two years ago.
To that end, Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen of DeBruyn Seed in Zeeland is continuing to collect items for Island Dog, founded to help canines and their masters in Puerto Rico. “You guys have been just absolutely amazing,” she exclaimed during her weekly appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” on Tuesday. “Last year alone, I sent between five and seven thousand dollars’ worth of items down there, so yes, it’s a nice thing to do.”
What Meeuwsen is looking for are expired and partially used medications, along with a number of other pet-related items, and perhaps most importantly, clean towels, for “they don’t have a reliable source of water and (Dorian) comes through and wrecks that again – they can’t clean anything.”
Donations dropped off at DeBruyn Seed off of Washington and Elm in Zeeland should be shipped off to Puerto Rico by Meeuwsen by mid-September.
