GENEVA TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A collision between a vehicle and a recumbent tricycle outside of South Haven yesterday afternoon hospitalized an 88-year-old man and jailed an 82-year-old man.
According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department, the older man was pedaling eastbound on 12th Avenue near 68th Street around 4:45 PM when he was struck from behind by an eastbound motor vehicle. The victim was taken to Bronson South Haven for treatment of head and arm injuries, and responding deputies noticed “the odor of intoxicants upon the breath” of the driver of the vehicle while taking downing his statement. After administering standardized field sobriety tests, the authorities arrested the motorist on drunken driving charges and lodged him in the Van Buren County Jail, pending formal arraignment in South Haven District Court.
The condition of the stricken bicyclist was not revealed, and no names were immediately disclosed as the case remains under investigation.
