HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Projects meant to address a shortage of affordable housing in the city of Holland are before the city’s Planning Commission this evening.
During the work-study session before the 5 PM business meeting in Council Chambers at City Hall, the panel will review a site plan put forward by Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity that would build six 11 thousand square foot-plus lots from an existing 1.6-acre vacant parcel at the end of West 26th Street east of Graafschap Road. Slated for completion within a year after construction starts, these homes would be priced at nearly $24,600. The commission would have to sign off on this project, as the parcel is currently zoned for four lot splits.
In the business meeting, the commission will go over a 72-unit, 17,575 square-foot, four-story building proposed by General Capital Group for a site off of River Avenue north of West 7th Street. The developer is seeking a Payment in Lieu of Taxes from the state and city, with Council slated to take up the matter in a work-study session tomorrow evening.
Also during tonight’s meeting, city planners will consider another extension request by Appledorn Assisted Living to hold up on moving forward with an already-approved 65-unit assisted living center slated on land off of Apple Avenue. The original development plan was endorsed in March of 2015, and two extensions have already been granted by the commission. This third quest is based on a letter from Appledorn stating that, “Based on our current occupancy levels and trends, we do not currently see market conditions allowing us to begin construction this year.” City staff is recommending another extension, but also wants the commission to “consider how many more extensions will be permitted” on this site.
