HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Some business and some discussion are ahead for the Holland City Council this evening.
Before the scheduled work-study session, the governing panel of the Tulip City will huddle behind closed doors in a special meeting to “review a written attorney opinion by the city attorney on recreational marijuana,” according to the office of City Manager Keith Van Beek. Late last month, Council retained the firm Dickinson Wright to provide legal services in dealing with the aftermath should Proposal 1 pass in the November 6th election, which it did. Van Beek said at the time that “the city of Holland has indicated a desire to participate in a consortium of local governmental units seeking direction.”
Following the special meeting, the work-study session will feature with the third and final installment of a “governing policy development” program with retained consultant Dave Medema aimed at “refreshing the mission and vision, accountability and transparency” of Council and city staff.
In addition, the Tulip City leaders will go over a proposal by the Holland in Bloom Committee and the Holland Convention and Visitors Bureau for a landscape improvement around the southwest corner of Centennial Park, near the junction of River Avenue and 12th Street. The idea is to construct 3D sculptures of Wizard of Oz characters outside of Herrick District Library, in keeping with the legacy of author L. Frank Baum, who wrote some of that series while living in “Macatawa, Michigan,” and then install a “yellow brick road” of bricks across River Avenue to the park, where a 3D book and a new landscaping area would be placed. The CVB would foot the bill for the entire project, with a deadline of completion by next June. No Council vote on the matter is planned for this evening.
Tonight’s City Council meeting and work-study session is open to the public and is slated to begin at 5:30 in the Second Floor Training Center of Holland City Hall. A link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
