ALLEGAN COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Monday night fire in Fillmore Township destroyed a grain dryer on a private farm, causing an ball-park-estimated $20,000 in structural damage, according to Overisel Fire Chief Ron Horsting. That’s not counting the soybeans destroyed in the fire.
No one was injured during the fire, which was reported just before 5:45 and was doused by 8:30 p.m. Monday, he said.
Overisel firefighters cover all of Overisel Township and the east side of Fillmore Township, which is where the burned grain dryer is located, near the Green Mark Equipment sales outlet, on M-40 (Lincoln Road), between 140th and 141st streets.
Horting said Overisel firefighters were aided by departments from Hamilton, Saugatuck, Graasfschap and Zeeland Township. Holland firefighters were among those who provided back-up service for the communities providing mutual aid.
M-40 was closed for the safety of emergency responders during the fire.
Overisel has 24 part-paid firefighters, Horsting said, but they are always looking for new members.
