HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Holland Area Arts Council is about to open a new two-person exhibition, The Constantines, on display in Padnos and Armstrong Galleries Nov. 16 – Jan. 12.
The opening reception is set for 6-8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16, 2018. Artists Jay and Patricia Constantine are set to be present. Light refreshments will be served.
The work of Jay and Patricia Constantine has developed over the couple’s 22-year marriage. During that time, interesting areas of overlap in aesthetic attitudes, processes, and imagery have occurred.
Both artists are dedicated to the importance of traditional forms and figurative art, though each pursus different themes. Most importantly, they are research-driven artists using historical and biographical information to give their projects background and depth.
Using the tondo format in his paintings, Jay appropriates images from the time period to take a critical look at church history in the West, which may to some be controversial. Patricia’s drawings present the edgy and disturbing world of social faux pas, fakes, and unique people.
“The Constantines are a force on the West Michigan art scene,” said arts council artistic director Mary Sundstrom. “Both are longtime time professors at the Kendall School of Art and Design, mentoring many, their works are technically superior and socially intriguing.”
The Constantines’ exhibition suports the Holland Area Arts Council’s mission to educate, engage, and challenge the community through the arts. The Arts Council is located at 150 E. Eighth St. in Holland For details, email helpdesk@hollandarts.org or visit www.hollandarts.org.
