GRAND HAVEN (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 3-year-old Muskegon boy is recovering after being run over by his father’s van on Halloween, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Christie Wendt.
Police were called to a Grand Haven Township subdivision just after 7:30 p.m. Halloween (Oct. 31, 2018).
The 36-year-old dad told police his sons, 3 and 7 years old, were sitting on the van’s floor, their legs dangling form the open sliding door. He’d been driving his Dodge Caravan at about 3 mph north on Hofma Drive near Thornapple Street in the Forest Park neighborhood, Wendt said.
The 3-year-old either fell or jumped out of the van while it was moving, the father told police.
Witnesses yelled for the driver to stop, which he did, but then backed up the van, running over the child’s lower body, Wendt said, then he pulled the van forward, striking the child a second time.
The 3-year-old was taken by North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon with non-life-threatening injuries, Wendt said.
The incident remains under investigation.
