Eleanor Hughes, age 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 9, 2019.
Eleanor and her husband Bob lived in Grand Rapids until Bob became the Executive Director of Camp Geneva in 1974 at which time they moved to Holland.
Eleanor was a lifelong educator. Eleanor began her career helping to set up education programs for young children at the Grand Rapids YMCA and The Other Way ministries before moving into elementary education at schools in Zeeland, Grand Rapids and finally at Longfellow elementary in Holland. She dedicated her life to instilling the passion for learning to those around her. While serving as a full time educator, Eleanor established programs to encourage women to enter the workforce, partnered with Hope College and Grand Valley State University on student teaching programs and education workshops working to integrate leadership lessons from education into industry.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Hughes; daughter, Luann (Ronald) DeVries; son, Paul (Lynn Marks) Hughes; grandchildren, Amy (Jordan) Kramer [Emerson, Hadley], Jill (Justin) Johnson [Claire, William]; and sister, Erma Brinks.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Rd. Holland, MI 49423 officiated by Darryl Bartlett. A time of visitation with the family will precede the service and start at 1:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be given in Eleanor’s honor to Holland Rescue Mission or Camp Geneva.
Burial to take place in Forest Grove Cemetery.
