WASHINGTON (WHTC, Oct. 28, 2026) – An Ottawa County community is getting a little financial help from Washington for its first responders.
On Wednesday, the offices of Michigan’s two Democratic US Senators – Gary Peters and Elisa Slotkin – announced Michigan recipients of Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grants. Among those recipients is the City of Hudsonville, which will receive nearly $17,000 towards the purchase of personal protection equipment for new cadets.
“Purchasing this needed Personal Protection Equipment would not have been possible without the assistance of the FEMA AFG program. We appreciate Senator Peters’ efforts on this committee as well and knowing how important this program is to the local fire departments.” – Steve Essenburg, Fire Chief of the City of Hudsonville Fire Department
In addition, the City of Norton Shores is getting over $97,000 to replace exhaust removal systems in its fire vehicles.
Both senators are members of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, of which Peters, who is retiring at year’s end, is the current co-chairman.
