ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 8, 2026) – While things have apparently quieted down on the main Allendale campus of Grand Valley State University, after a number of incidents during the first month of classes, the school is taking steps to ensure that such peace continues.
Beginning on Thursday, GVSU will enhance enforcement of its visitor and guest policy. From 10 PM to 5 AM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday, entrance access to the Valley Campus will be limited to students, faculty, staff, contractors, pre-registered guests, and emergency/service vehicles. The arch entrance off of Lake Michigan Drive (M-45) will be the only public entry point open, with all other access points accessible only for exiting.
This is a follow up to a letter sent two weeks ago to students and parents by the school, outlining a series of immediate physical safety adjustments, including increased residential building access controls, enforced guest policies and quiet hours, and increased patrols around designated areas of concern across campus grounds.
Since classes began at GVSU on August 31st, there has been a large brawl involving bats and a knife, over a dozen vehicle burglaries, an armed assault at a residential building, vandalism of a Flock surveillance unit, and a “Peeping Tom” arrest following an off-campus apartment unit break in. Campus security officials have since huddled with Ottawa County Sheriff Eric DeBoer and other law enforcement figures.
