HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 7, 2026) – An important day on the public school calendar in Michigan is here.
Districts are required to take an enrollment count on the first Wednesday in October, for it determines 90 percent of the per-pupil funding coming from the state. For academic 2027, that comes to $10,300 per student. A second count in February will help in comprising the remaining 10 percent.
For several years, Holland Public Schools has confounded consultants who had predicted lower counts by having more in the classroom than before. Superintendent Nick Cassidy is confident this trend will continue, based on what he’s seen so far in the first six weeks of the school year.
This year, districts can use the greater of its current-year student count, or a three-year average student count, for the per-pupil foundation allowance, with targeted and weighted funding for at-risk students, English learners, and special education.
