HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 18, 2026) – Sentiment against a relatively new law enforcement tool appears to be growing, but for one Lakeshore community, Flock surveillance cameras aren’t going away.
Last week, Holland Department of Public Safety Chief Matt Messer made a presentation in a City Council Study Session on his department’s use of these license plate readers. Mayor Nathan Bocks and his colleagues on the Tulip City’s governing panel came away impressed.
There were public comments during this past Wednesday’s Council business meeting questioning the use of the Flock system over concerns of privacy, profiling, and abuse. Other communities have ended contracts as a result of these concerns, but Bocks is hopeful that such public pressure won’t lead to a similar decision in Holland.
Ottawa County Sheriff Eric DeBoer will make a presentation on his department’s use of the Flock system in a 9:30 AM Board of Commissioners work session at the Grand Ravines Lodge (9920 42nd Avenue) north of Jenison on Friday.
