ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 15, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash at exit 55 of I-196 on Monday night critically injured a 23-year-old Zeeland man.
No names were disclosed by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office as first responders were dispatched shortly after 10 PM to the eastbound exit ramp of the freeway at Byron Road. That was where a pickup truck, pulling a trailer, was attempting to turn left from the ramp when it was struck by an eastbound sedan.
The Zeeland man in the sedan suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Corewell-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Meanwhile, the four men in the pickup truck – a 22-year-old driver, and three passengers ranging in age from 16 to 36 – fled the scene on foot. With the help of a drone and a canine, the four were eventually located. The driver was taken to a “local hospital” for treatment of minor injuries, while the other three had bumps and bruises. There was no immediate word as to any arrests of possible charges against those four.
The incident remains under investigation.
