SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 14, 2026) – A deer cull could be in the near future for a Lakeshore community.
During Monday night’s biweekly business meeting, the Saugatuck City Council will be asked to approve spending up to $30,000 to remove deer from Oval Beach this fall. The proposal would retain Berg’s Animal and Bug Control for harvesting up to 30 animals, at $495 per deer, through a regulated process in coordination with a related program in neighboring Douglas.
Other matters to be considered by the governing panel is a proposed warming station at Mize Rose garden, with the Saugatuck/Douglas Convention and Visitors Bureau covering all construction costs; trail remediation, habitat restoration, signage improvements, and establishment maintenance of the 173-acre Saugatuck Harbor Nature Area, in conjunction with the ODC Network, at a cost of over $78,000; and placing a publicly accessible AED at the base of Mt. Baldhead, with the help of the Saugatuck-Douglas HeartSafe Initiative.
