LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 12, 2026) – A Lakeshore community is making a necessary investment in recycling.
On Wednesday, Laketown Township trustees unanimously accepted a state Recycling Infrastructure Grant of over $117,000 to purchase about 2,200 recycling carts for residential use. The township will be asked to pay more than $23,000 of the total cost, with the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy picking up the rest of the tab.
Deputy Clerk Zoey Hallam, who wrote up the successful grant request, said that the population of the township is above the 5,000 minimum mark in population required by state law for having a curbside recycling program in place.
The 96-gallon carts are to replace traditional yellow bags when they are phased in early next year. Laketown Township’s current contract with Republic Services expires this coming March.
