HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — State Rep. Luke Meerman, R-Coopersville, says he hopes during this next session of the state legislature, he’d like to see a law passed letting police do saliva tests during traffic stops. He told WHTC it’s one way to test a driver’s impairment from marijuana.
He compared the tests to roadside breath tests for alcohol.
Meerman voted against legalizing marijuana, but now that the drug is legal, he said, it’s important to find ways to enforce impaired driving rules– whether from alcohol or various forms of marijuana.
He said police in some areas, including Ottawa County, carry test units for checking marijuana impairment, but must rely on the driver’s permission to administer the test.
